Financial Controller (no1 finance)| South Gloucestershire (100% onsite) | £80,000 - £90,000

We are currently partnering with a premium independent housebuilder with a reputation for quality, excellence and community-focused developments. As they continue to scale operations and secure new land opportunities, they are seeking a hands-on, commercially minded Financial Controller to take ownership of the finance function and support business growth.

The Role
Reporting directly to the CEO, you will manage a small, dedicated finance team of two and hold full responsibility for the company’s financial controls, reporting, and cash flow management. This is a brilliant opportunity for a finance professional who enjoys both the technical precision of accounting and the commercial strategy of property development.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Reporting and Management Accounts:
  • Own the monthly accounts process, closing and delivering full month-end packs (P&L, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow) within 10–15 working days.
  • Provide variance analysis against budget and prior years directly to the Directors.
  • Lead the year-end process, maintaining the trial balance and coordinating seamlessly with external auditors for timely Companies House filing.
Cash Management, Funding & Viability:
  • Manage daily liquidity and partner with the CEO on rolling weekly/monthly cash flow forecasting.
  • Liaise with land and commercial teams to evaluate land acquisition viabilities, development budgets, and valuations.
  • Manage banking relationships, including negotiating loan facility terms, treasury management, and handling development drawdowns.
Controls, Compliance & Balance Sheet Integrity:
  • Maintain and improve financial controls, including purchase orders, payment limits, and segregation of duties.
  • Oversee the sales and purchase ledgers, ensuring clean, fully reconciled material balance sheet accounts.
  • Ensure full compliance with HMRC for VAT submissions and PAYE, while also managing insurance and pension matters.
Team Leadership & Process Improvement:
  • Manage, mentor, and review the work of a team of two, optimising workload priorities across the month-end cycle.
  • Drive system efficiencies, maintaining and upgrading accounting and IT software (ideally COINS-based) to speed up reporting output.
Your Profile:
  • Advanced Excel Skills (Pivot Tables, vLookups, financial modelling) and proficiency in major accounting platforms
  • Minimum 5 years post qualified experience
  • Direct experience handling VAT returns, PAYE management and implementing tight controls
  • Demonstrable experience managing junior staff
  • Direct housebuilding or construction industry experience (Or adjacent)
  • Experience with COINS accounting software (highly desirable, not essential)
